WE ARE RYDERS ! We all love this town and we strongly support all efforts to make it a better place, from restoring heritage buildings to greening dreary, neglected corners, from supporting new Sports for young people to celebrating Pride, asking RTC for new beach amenities, including disabled access, we are the cheerleaders for everything Ryde. We are a team of people who believe there are creative and sustainable possibilities for real regeneration in Ryde. We come from all walks of life and live in and around Ryde. Anyone who shares our optimistic vision is part of the team.

Get Involved!

We are always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision a reality. We'll help you find a way to volunteer that best suits you.

Thank You

We are a fully constituted civic group. We do not charge a membership fee and rely on donations to keep meetings , websites ,  membership of public bodies etc going. Thanks to all who contribute in funds or in kind .

About Us

TRS was formed as a direct response to the unwelcome Regeneration Plans put forward by the Isle of Wight Council.

A handful of residents realised that there was no formal group that could coordinate action to protect the special character of Ryde.

It was not just the “high rise Hell “ plans for the seafront but also the continual pressure of Planning Applications from the rural southern boundaries of Ryde.

We came to understand that the Planning System is not really adequate to safeguard the unique historical, architectural and economic aspects of our often undervalued town and it was only by coming together we could counter the encroachment of low grade commercial development , often driven by thoughtless and careless planning considerations , often on our publicly owned land. The small group galvanised quickly to a few hundred of determined and engaged citizens.

Ryde is distinguished not only by its Georgian heart , the beauty of its built environment , but also its sandy beaches and rural surrounds and its independent economy. It is up to us to guard it.

As a community we all acknowledge that change is inevitable and development can and should have positive outcomes for the whole community.

While TRS supports Conservation and Preservation we are also eager to see true regeneration , whether in terms of sensitive, appropriate new development or the re use and repurposing of existing buildings and green spaces.

What We Do

We look closely at all matters of local interest, from Planning to Pandemic Recovery Plans. From Conservation issues to Consultation on Housing Need.

Anything happening in Ryde is important to us.

Anything happening in Ryde is important to us.

Whenever a member or resident raises concerns we will look into it and make appropriate representation.

We want to represent all sectors of our community. The past few years have been especially tough for our young people, the loss of the Ice Rink was a real blow and we have been particularly vocal about keeping the Skatepark on the Seafront.

The Ryde Society works closely with Ryde Town Council and where necessary Isle of Wight Council.  We also work alongside Ryde Green Initiative, Network Ryde , Ryde Business Association, Monkton Arts , Aspire Ryde  to name a few. We  are always happy to promote new and existing businesses.

Members sit on the Ryde Regeneration Group, the Heritage Action Zone Stakeholder Group and the Ryde Greening Initiative .

We hold regular open public meetings that give all residents the opportunity to hear from not just us, but also Councillors and other Invited guests all the news on all things Ryde.

We send out a quarterly newsletter to inform members , local Councillors , the broader community and media of issues being addressed by the Society. We also send email notifications if there is an urgent issue to highlight.

We are not aligned or affiliated with any political party but we are a member of Civic Voice and The Heritage Trust Network.

Ryde Town Hall

TRS have been supporting RTC in their efforts to bring the Town Hall back into public use

We see this building as the heart of Ryde, both its past and future. Join us in the rescue !
